Backpacking tents come in all shapes and sizes, with a variety of features. When choosing the right tent for you, it’s important to consider how much weight you’re willing to carry. In this guide, I aim to answer the question, what is the lightest 1 person backpacking tent?

For those looking for the short answer…

The lightest 1 person backpacking tent is the Big Agnes Scout 1 Platinum, which weighs in at just 366 grams. Whilst this is the lightest tent, you will need to bring hiking poles to put it up as it doesn’t come with its own.

What Is the Lightest 1 Person Backpacking Tent?

The lightest 1 person backpacking tent that I have found is the Big Agnes Scout 1 Platinum Tent:

Big Agnes Scout 1 Platinum Tent

  • Weight = 366g

  • Packed Size = 41cm x ø11cm

  • Outer Size = 213cm x 81cm x 105cm

  • Price Range = 200 - 400

This tent has been designed to be super lightweight, and at a weight of just 366 grams, there are few tents that weigh less than this, other than a simple tarp shelter of course.

The downside to going ultra-light is that you have to sacrifice in other areas. For instance, the hydrostatic head (waterproof factor) is just 1,200mm for the fly and groundsheet, which is low compared to other 1 man tents you can get. This tent also doesn’t come with poles and you will need hiking poles to put this tent up.

If you don’t want to take hiking poles with you just to put your tent up, you will need a lightweight tent that comes with its own poles. In my opinion, one of the best 1 man tents is the MSR Carbon Reflex 1 Person Tent, which at 790 grams is still fairly light.

MSR Carbon Reflex 1 Person Tent

  • Weight = 790g

  • Packed Size = 43cm x ø13cm

  • Outer Size = 213cm x 137 cm x 81cm

  • Price Range = 400 - 600

What to Look for In a Lightweight Backpacking Tent

When looking for a lightweight backpacking tent, it’s important to consider whether the tent poles are included. The waterproof rating is also important – look for a rating of at least 3,000 mm – and be sure to check the size when erect. Some tents can be quite small when set up, making them unsuitable for larger people or groups.

Why Do I Need a Lightweight Tent for Backpacking?

When you are backpacking, the less weight you carry, the better. A lightweight tent is a key piece of gear to reduce your load. There are several factors to consider when choosing a lightweight tent:

The first consideration is the type of camping you will be doing. If you will mostly be camping in developed campgrounds with established campsites, then a heavier tent that offers more protection from the elements is not as important. However, if you plan to do a lot of camping in more rugged or exposed areas, then a lightweight tent that offers more protection from wind and rain is essential.

The second factor to consider is how much space you need in your tent. If you are going solo, then you can get away with a smaller, lighter tent. However, if you are travelling with friends or family, you will need a larger tent that can accommodate everyone.

What Is the Best 1 Man Tent?

When looking for the best 1 man tent, you need to strike the best balance between weight, price, size and features that meet your needs.

The tent that I believe strikes the best balance between all of these factors is the Terra Nova Laser Competition 1, as it comes with a high hydrostatic head, packs down relatively small and has a decent amount of room inside it.

Terra Nova Laser Competition 1 Person Tent

  • Weight = 1,590g

  • Packed Size = 30cm x ø14cm

  • Outer Size = 220cm x 143 cm x 100cm

  • Price Range = 400 - 500

Summary

So there you go, the lightest 1 person backpacking tent is the Big Agnes Scout 1 Platinum Tent. However, whilst this tent may be light, there are some limitations, including the fact that you will need to bring hiking poles with you in order to put it up.

Happy Camping!
