Whilst 750 – 5,000 grams represents the range of weights you will find for 2 person backpacking tents, the majority of tents in for this size typically weigh in at around 2,500 grams. This weight seems to be the sweet spot when it comes to tents of this size as they strike the balance between being light enough for 2 people to carry as well as not compromising on features.

Weight is an important consideration, but it’s not the only one. Think about how you will use the tent and what other features are important to you. For example, do you need a lot of ventilation or is weather protection more important? How easy is it to set up and take down?

When choosing a tent, be sure to balance weight with other factors to find the best option for you.

What to Consider when Looking for A 2 Person Backpacking Tent

When yo are going backpacking or wild camping, there is a temptation to put the weight of the tent as the top priority when deciding which one to go for. Whilst weight is an important factor, it is not the only factor you should consider.

The following are the main factors to consider when choosing a 2 person tent:

Tent Weight

When looking for a 2 person backpacking tent, it is important to consider the weight of the tent. A heavier tent can be more difficult to carry, especially on long hikes. The weight of a tent can be determined by how many people are using the tent and if it has any extra features such as a vestibule. The more people using the tent, the heavier it will be. An area to store gear is also an added burden on weight.

Tent Capacity

Tent capacity is an important consideration when you are looking for a tent for two. You’ll want to find a tent that’s big enough for the two of you, but not too big or bulky. A tent with a high capacity will be heavier than one that has a smaller capacity. This can make hiking difficult with a large and heavy tent, especially when it’s raining.

You might be tempted to save weight and space and go for the smallest tent possible. Just make sure you pick a tent that is at least the right capacity for the number of people using it, as trying to fit two people in a one-person tent can be difficult and will result in a poor night’s sleep.

Tent Size

When looking for a 2 person backpacking tent, consider the size. Some tents are too small for two people and can be uncomfortable. Make sure to find a tent that is spacious enough for you and your travelling companion.

Tent Fabric

As with all things backpacking, the fabric is important. The two main types of canvas used in backpacking tents are nylon and polyester. Silnylon is a strong fabric that is waterproof, and easy to repair. Polyester on the other hand is tougher, but not as waterproof.  The main difference between the two fabrics is that polyester is more breathable and better at keeping the heat in.

Tent Features

When looking for a 2 person backpacking tent, consider the features that are important to you. Some things to think about include the weight of the tent, the amount of storage space, and the ease of set-up. For example, if you are looking for a lightweight tent, some tents can be as little as 6 ounces each!

Most backpacking tents come with a rain fly to increase the waterproofing and keep the rain out. A rainfly also protects your tent from any condensation that might build up when it rains.  If you are looking for a lightweight tent, consider a tent that doesn’t have a rain fly.

Tent Price

When looking for a 2 person backpacking tent, you’ll need to consider the price. Tents can range in price from £50 to £1,000, so you’ll need to decide what you’re comfortable with. The 2 person tents are usually the most affordable, but to keep the costs as low as you can you’ll have to compromise on features and comfort.

Summary

So there you go, a good weight for a 2 person backpacking tent is around 2.5kg. Consider your needs and preferences when choosing a tent to ensure you are happy with your purchase. Be sure to test out the tent before your trip to make sure everything fits and works properly.
