You don’t have to be a mountaineer in order to use this chair, but at a weight of just 11lbs, you will barely notice you have the chair on your shoulder and will feel like climbing a mountain.  It also packs down into a small carry bag, measuring just 34″x 10″x 10″, which is much easier to carry than a chair that folds flat.  The handy carry bag means you can still have both hand free to carry other gear if you need or to help you climb that mountain!

The weight capacity of this chair is 300lbs, which is a good amount and just puts this chair in the heavy duty bracket.

This camping rocking chair has a low seat, which is implied by the name.  It is just 15″ off the ground at the front, sloping to 13″ at the back.  This is fine for those who are easily mobile, but if you do have knee or back problems, you might want to avoid this chair.

ALPS Mountaineering Rocking Chair

  • Weight = 17.5lbs

  • Max load = 300lbs

If you want a high quality rocking folding camping chair then the ALPS Mountaineering Rocking Chair is an excellent choice.

From the first time you sit in this chair you can feel the quality of the design.  The padded seat, made with a 600 denier polyester material, is extremely comfortable.  The chair position also locks into place, meaning you can relax and rock away after a long, hard day.  The high back of this chair also gives you a place to rest your head, which is a bonus when compared to some of the smaller chairs on the market.

The steel frame of this heavy duty folding chair provides a high degree of durability, however it does also make the chair pretty heavy, with an overall weight of 17.5lbs making it the joint heaviest on the list.  You would expect this to translate into a high weight limit, however at 300lbs, it is in line with others in this list, but not as high as one would expect given the overall heft of the chair.

The kicker with this one is the price.  With an RRP of $249.99, it is much more expensive that other chairs on the list.  That said, you can generally find this chair on sale at around $149.99, bringing it in line with other chairs on the list and down to a much more reasonable price point.

What To Look For When Choosing a Heavy Duty Folding Rocking Chair

Choosing a heavy duty folding rocking chair can be difficult, so here are some of the important factors that I use when choosing any pretty much any camping chair.

Weight Capacity

When choosing a heavy duty folding rocking chair, weight capacity is probably the most important factor. There is no point buying a chair when you know that you will exceed the maximum weight and therefore will simply break it.

My typical rule of thumb is to work out how much I weigh and then look at camp chairs with a weight capacity that is between 5-10% higher.  This will allow for extra strain on the chair should a “plop” down in to the seat as opposed to “gently lower” myself into it.

Comfort

I want my camping chair to be somewhere that I can sit in for a long time without needing to leave it unless absolutely necessary.  Having a chair made with a soft material, preferably with padding is something that you should look out for when looking at camp chairs.

I would also look for the extra details that enhance your comfort as well.  Cup holders are a great addition to a chair, reducing the need for you to lean forward to grab your drink from a nearby table.  The level above this is a side table for storing snacks as well as your drink.  My favourite thing to look for is a coolbag for when I’m spending long periods outdoors and want to keep my drinks and snacks cold.

Price

Price is another important factor when choosing a camping chair.  If you will be using the chair regularly, you should consider spending a little more in order to ger a higher quality chair.  If you will be using your chair infrequently, then maybe look at more budget options.

When lowering your budget you need to be aware of the compromises that this will bring.  Generally you will be doing away with a few extra features as you lower your budget.  Make a list of the must haves and the nice to haves and work out how much extra you are willing to pay for optional extras over you base requirements.

Chair Weight

The weight of the chair itself is another factor to consider, particularly if this is a chair you are regularly going to be lifting and moving around.

If the chair is on the heavier side, say over 14lbs, this is going to be pretty annoying to carry, particularly over ling distances.  If it is generally just going to be set up not far from your car, this should be less of a concern.

Overall Chair Size

The overall size of the chair is definitely something to consider, especially when looking at heacy duty chairs.

The chances are that if you need a heavy duty chair, you are bigger than the average person, either in terms of height or width.  Depending on which bracket you fit into, you should check out the seat height and width to make sure you will be comfortable.  The overall size of the chair will help determine this if these specific measurements are unavailable.

Pack Size

Pack size is another factor to consider, but only really important either when you need to carry the chair over a long distance, or if space is at a premium in your house/garage/car (delete as appropriate).
