How To Choose A Sleeping Bag
Weight
When wild camping, an important factor to consider when choosing a sleeping bag is the weight, as you will likely be carrying this with a lot of other wild camping gear.
Deciding what weight will be ideal for you will depend very much on the weight of the rest of your gear and how much weight you believe you can comfortably carry. Just remember, if you are walking a long way you where you will be camping, a heavier load will burn significantly more calories.
Pack Size
Pack size refers to how small the sleeping bag will be when packed down. Pretty much every sleeping bag comes with some kind of bag or stuff sack, allowing you to keep the sleeping bag at its most packed down size possible (whilst still being able to get it in the bag of course).
How small or large a packed size you can manage will of course depend on the rucksack you will be taking and how you intend to carry the sleeping bag. If you are strapping it to the outside of your rucksack, you may not be as concerned about the size. If you are packing the sleeping bag inside your rucksack, you will need to consider what other items you are also carrying, so should look for a small sleeping bag where possible.
Insulation Type
There are two main types if insulation in sleeping bags: Down and Synthetic insulation
Down Insulation
Feather down insulation is light-weight insulation that is great at providing warmth for your sleeping bag.
Tiny air pockets are created in the sleeping bag, which is very effective at trapping the warm air generated by your body inside the sleeping bag. This helps to retain the heat and keep you warm during the night.
These sleeping bags are much warmer than synthetic sleeping bags and can compress down to a much smaller size, making them easier to pack down into a stuff sack.
These sleeping bags tend to be more expensive than synthetic sleeping bags due to the expense of getting the down material.
They are also not a good choice in wet weather as they will absorb moisture when damp. The feathers will then lose their fluffiness and as a result, will lose their heat retaining properties.
Synthetic Insulation
Synthetic insulation uses man-made fibres to provide warmth to your sleeping bag.
These tyoes of sleeping bags are generally cheaper than down sleeping bags, as the insulation materials is much easier and cheaper to source.
These sleeping bags are also easier to keep clean as they don’t absorb water in the same way that down sleeping bags do.
It is also the case that they are better in damp conditions as, even when wet, they still retain some of theith insulating abilities.
The downside with synthetic sleeping bags is that they don’t pack down as small as down sleeping bags and they also tend to be heavier as well.
Shape
Sleeping bags come in a few different shapes and the shape you will need really depends on where you are sleeping and whether you mind being restricted a little when sleeping
Square
Square sleepings bags (which are really rectangular) are what most people think of and probably remember when thinking about sleeping bags.
These sleeping bags generally have a zip running down the side and bottom of the sleeping bag and can be fully opened and used more like a duvet as well as a sleeping bag.
Due to their shape, these are roomier than mummy shape sleeping bags, however, this means there is more space for air in the sleeping bag and more space for warm air to escape at the top. As a result, these sleeping bags tend to be poor at retaining heat compares to mummy sleeping bags.
Mummy
Mummy shape sleeping bags are shaped in such a way to make you look like an Egyptian mummy! The taper from the shoulders to the feet, meaning that they follow the shape of your body, rather than being the same width from the shoulders to the feet.
The benefit of this sort of shape is that they can be easily pulled tight around the head and shoulders area, reducing the amount of air escaping from the sleeping bag during the night and providing a warmer nights sleep.
These sleeping bags also tend to be lighter than square shape sleeping bags as they use less material overall.
The downside here is that they can be quite restrictive compared to other shape sleeping bags. If you like to spread out when you sleep, these shape sleeping bags might not be right for you.
Pod
Pod shape sleeping bags are a fairly new concept. These sleeping bags are shaped in shaped like an oval and are designed to give the user more room to spread out inside the sleeping bag.
Whilst they do provide more room, the compromise with these sleeping bags is that they have worse heat retention than mummy sleeping bags. They are also bulkier and heavier than both mummy and square sleeping bags.
Season Rating
The season rating of the sleeping bag refers to the ideal time of year that you can use the sleeping bag. Season ratings are listed from 1-4, with 1 being summer/warm weather and 4 being winter/very cold conditions.
Season Rating | Use |
Season 1 | Summer Camping |
Season 2 | Late Spring Camping |
Season 3 | Late Autumn/Early Winter Camping |
Season 4 | Cold, Frosty Nights Camping |
Before choosing your sleeping bag for wild camping in the UK, you should consider what sort of weather conditions you are likely to use it in.
Temperature Ratings
Temperature ratings are used to assess the comfort of the user at different temperatures. There are three types of temperature rating used for sleeping bags; Comfort, Limit and Extreme.
Comfort Temperature
The comfort temperature is the lowest comfort limit at which you in a relaxed position is at a thermal equilibrium, where they are neither hot nor cold. This is the main temperature you should look for when choosing your sleeping bag.
Limit Temperature
The limit temperature is the lowest temperature at which you, when in a huddled position, would be at a thermal equilibrium, where they are neither hot nor cold. This is not the recommended temperature for the sleeping bag but can be used as a guide when considering the different ranges of the sleeping bag.
Extreme Temperature
The extreme temperature rating is the level at which the sleeping bag can help you survive in an extreme weather situation. I have not listed these in this guide as they are not commonly provided by the manufacturer and in reality, should not be used as a guide for buying a sleeping bag when wild camping.
There are other things you can do to help keep yourself warm when camping, which I cover in this guide.
Features
There are other features that you may want to consider when buying a sleeping bag, which I haven’t gone into in the below guide. These are:
- Baffles – The compartments that hold the insulation in the sleeping bag
- Inner Lining – The material used inside the sleeping bag. You should look for a breathable material here to stop you from getting too hot and sweaty in your sleep
- Outer Fabric – The material used on the outside of the sleeping bag. Something water-resistant and durable would make a good choice here.
- Two Way Zip – A two-way zip allows you to open the sleeping bag from the top or bottom and can improve the ventilation fo the sleeping bag
- Zip Baffle – This is insulation behind the zip, reducing the heat loss through the zip area
- Zip Cover – This is a piece of fabric used to stop the zip from moving when zipped up
- Hood – The area of the sleeping bag that goes over your head to reduce heat loss from your head
- Draft Collar – This is the part of the sleeping bag that can be tied around the neck area to reduce the amount of heat escaping up through the top of the sleeping bag
- Inner Pocket – Pockets inside the sleeping bag for storing items, such as phones and money
- Stuff Sack – This is a bag for storing the sleeping bag. Mummy sleeping bags don’t tend to fold into a bag and are just stuffed inside theirs. Much easier for packing away and compressing the sleeping bag.
