What to Consider When Buying Cookware for Wild Camping
There are a number of factors you should take into account when it comes to deciding what kind of cookware you use for camping.
Number of People
How many people you will be needing to cook for is important as it will help you work out how many pots and pans you will need as well as what size of pans.
Typically for solo wild camping just looking for something to boil water, you can get away with a 0.5L cooking pot. Increase that to at least 1L for two campers.
If you fancy cooking up some bacon, eggs, etc, you will need a frying pan for that as well. The size of the pan you need will depend again on the number of people you are cooking for unless you are comfortable cooking/eating in shifts of course.
Weight
If you are hiking to your camping spot, you are unlikely to want to pack a heavy pot and pan for cooking. Looking at light-weight options might be a good choice here.
The material of the pan is typically the easiest way of working out which are the lightest, though I have also included the weight in this guide. The materials to look for from lightest to heaviest are:
- Titanium – Very lightweight and durable
- Aluminium – Light, but not as durable as titanium or steel
- Stainless Steel – Very durable, but can be heavy. It will last a long time
Packed Size
Considering how small the set will pack is another consideration.
If you need to fit everything into your bag, you might want to look at buying cookware that packs down small. This will ensure you save space in your rucksack and therefore have space for other essential items.
On the other hand, you might be perfectly comfortable with a frying pan swinging from your rucksack. It’s really about personal preference and I would always want to get everything I can into my rucksack.
What is Included in the Set
Knowing what is included in the set is another factor to consider.
Some cookware sets come with everything you need, including pots, pans, plates/bowls, cutlery, and the works! Others might simply be a cooking pot.
What you need will depend on what you are planning on eating and whether you have any of the other bits already. I have highlighted below what comes in each set to make things easier for you to find.

Best Pots and Pans Sets for Wild Camping
When you’re wild camping for a longer period of time, you might need both a frying pan and a pot for boiling water. You could buy these separately, or you could buy a combined set.
The advantage of a combined set is that they have been designed to fit together snugly, meaning you get the maximum space-saving possible. However, the compromise is that you will often have a reduced size frying pan, which should still be fine for fry-up for one.

Best Alternative Cookware for Wild Camping
Sometimes you want to use something a little different for your camp cooking needs. The following are a couple of alternatives to those wanting a simple pot and pan setup.
Summary
As you can see there are lots of options for you when it comes to choosing the best cookware for wild camping. It really depends on whether you prefer to go for a really light setup, the smallest possible cookware set or something a bit different.
The other option would be to go for the no-cook option, taking any food that you can consume without the need for heating. Personally, I couldn’t cope without a hot cuppa in the morning!
