How to choose a tent for wild camping

When choosing a tent, whether it is for wild camping or family camping, there are various factors you will need to consider:

  • Weight – This is the packed weight of the tent. Lighter tents are great for wild camping and trekking, where you will be carrying your kit with you to find a place to camp. Anything over 2.5kg might be a little too heavy for a long hike
  • Berth – This is the number of people that the tent is designed to accommodate. You may find this number will result in a fairly “snug” sleeping arrangement for the number it claims
  • Bedroom Space – This is the amount of space designed for sleeping in. This is usually the main inner tent
  • Outer Tent Space – The outer tent space is the total amount of space the tent will take up. This is usually the size of your flysheet and will include the storage space inside the tent
  • Tent Style – This is the shape of the tent. Styles include Tunnel, Dome and Ridge, as well as many others
  • Waterproofing – This is measured by Hydrostatic Head, which is how large a column of water your tent could resist
  • Storage – This is the area in your tent where you can store your kit, that isn’t your sleeping area
  • Seasons – This is the number of seasons that the tent is designed to be used in. A 3 season tent will be designed for spring, summer and autumn. A 4 or all-season tent will be warmer and include the winter.

Vango Nevis 200 Tent

At a weight of just over 2kg and packing down to 46cm x ø18cm, the Vango Nevis 200 is a tunnel tent designed be lightweight and compact, which makes it a great option for wild camping.

The bedroom space offered is just the right size for two people to get a good rest after a long day trekking, however, you might find that you don’t have a lot of storage space for your kit as the porch is fairly small.

The hydrostatic head rating for the fly and the groundsheet should be suitable for typical British weather, with the tent designed for 3 season camping.

At a price of just £110 (at the time of writing), you will find that this tent offers great features at an affordable price.

The bedroom width of 225cm should give you enough space for 2 with a little wiggle room inside, meaning you won’t feel like you are cosying up to your tent partner too much.

The outer width of 175cm gives you a small storage area for your camping gear, but not really enough if you are planning on camping for a long period of time and will need more gear with you.

The hydrostatic head rating of the fly and groundsheet means that this tent can survive easily in spring, summer and autumn, just as Vangi suggest by giving this a 3 season rating.

The 4,000 mm hydrostatic head rating for both the fly and groundsheet means this should withstand the UK weather for 3 seasons of the year.

Terra Nova Solar Photon 2 Tent

The Terra Nova Solar Photon 2 Tent has been designed with lightweight in mind. At just 849 grams, this is an incredibly easy tent to carry when out backpacking.

The bedroom width on this tent is narrow, so you may find it quite snug for two. However the small packed size of 40cm x ø15cm is a major bonus.

Designed for 3 seasons and with a hydrostatic head rating of 2,000mm for the fly, this will suit the warmer weather better than colder weather.

Hilleberg Anaris

The Hilleberg Anaris is an airy 2 person ridge tent, which gives you a large sleeping and storage area.

The 1,400g is very light, however, this is because the tent doesn’t include poles as it is designed to be used with trekking poles to hold it up. This means that you can save some weight and put those trekking poles to another use!

If you want a classic ridge tent, have trekking poles and want a light tent, this might be the tent for you.

As you can see there are lots of factors to consider when looking for a tent for wild camping. From my research, I believe that the best 2 man tent for wild camping is the Vango F10 Xenon UL 2+ as it offers a great balance between prices and performance. If you know you are likely to be camping in milder weather, the Naturehink 20D Mongar is a great value for money option.

Is there anything that I have missed that you need to know about? Let me know and I will try and add it to this guide.
