20 Best 1 Man Tents for Wild Camping in 2024

  • Save

Nothing beats the feeling of heading out into the wild and setting up camp for the night. I’m not usually one for the solo adventure, but after a year of not being able to travel anywhere, I decided to try and find the best 1 man tents for wild camping. You never know, I might just get into it.

If you’re in a hurry, my two favourites are:

  • Save

Terra Nova Competition 1

A good size tent made from some of the best materials available. This premium tent comes with a decent hydrostatic head rating and packs down fairly small.

  • Save

Vango Nevis 100

This is the cheapest tent on my list, but for just £90 it packs a lot of premium features. With a good hydrostatic head and decent storage, you’ll be hard pressed to get a better tent for the better price.

How to Choose a Tent for Wild Camping

When choosing a tent, whether it is for wild camping or family camping, there are various factors you will need to consider:

  • Weight – This is the packed weight of the tent. Lighter tents are great for wild camping and trekking, where you will be carrying your kit with you to find a place to camp. Anything over 2.5kg might be a little too heavy for a long hike, but you will struggle to find a decent 1 man tent that is over this weight
  • Berth – This is the number of people that the tent is designed to accommodate. You may find this number will result in a fairly “snug” sleeping arrangement for the number it claims, except with a 1 man tent of course
  • Bedroom Space – This is the amount of space designed for sleeping in. This is usually the main inner tent
  • Outer Tent Space – The outer tent space is the total amount of space the tent will take up. This is usually the size of your flysheet and will include the storage space inside the tent
  • Tent Style – This is the shape of the tent. Styles include Tunnel, Dome and Ridge, as well as many others
  • Waterproofing – This is measured by Hydrostatic Head, which is how large a column of water your tent could resist
  • Storage – This is the area in your tent where you can store your kit, that isn’t your sleeping area (also known as a porch)
  • Seasons – This is the number of seasons that the tent is designed to be used in. A 3 season tent will be designed for spring, summer and autumn. A 4 or all-season tent will be warmer and include the winter.

Best 1 Man Wild Camping Tent for Under £200

Vango Nevis 100 1 Man Tent

The Vango Nevis 100 is a great low cost 1 man tent for those who are just starting out wild camping.

At just £90, you get a tent with some premium specifications at an entry-level price. One of these premium features is the 3,000mm hydrostatic head rating for the rain fly, which is up there with some of the more premium products available.

With a bedroom width of 95cm, there is plenty of space for you to fit your sleeping mat inside as well as some of your camping gear. The porch area also offers a little space for your boots as well, though you might struggle to fit lots of kit in there.

At 1,700 grams altogether, this tent is one of the heaviest on the list, however, it should be manageable for one person to carry.

This tent would be a great choice for those just starting with wild camping.

The Naturehike CloudUp1 210T is another low-cost tent for those looking to get into wild camping.

The rain fly and groundsheet come with a hydrostatic head of 3,000mm, which is quite high compared to some of the premium brands on the list.

You also get a good amount of space with this tent, with a sleeping area of 230cm x 110cm, which is easy enough to fit your sleeping mat and some gear. There is a small porch area at the front, though this isn’t much to write home about.

The tent is on the heavier side at 1,600 grams, but this isn’t excessively heavy by any means.

Another great option for those looking to get started with wild camping and not wanting to spend a fortune on the ultralight options out there.

Geertop 4 Season 1 Person Tent

The Geertop 4 Season Tent is a low cost, teepee style tent costing just £100.

At a weight of 1,160, this is a fairly light tent for the cost, however, this weight is excluding the support pole as this tent is designed to be used with a trekking pole. If you were already intending on using a trekking pole then that’s fine. If you weren’t going to use one, then you will need to use one or buy a support pole to use with the tent.

The hydrostatic head for the fly and groundsheet is 3,000mm, which is very good for this price.

You get a decent bedroom space with this tent at 210cm x 90cm. This is plenty of space for your sleeping mat and some gear as well. There is also a good amount of room in the porch area as well for boots and things you don’t want to take into your tent.

A good tent for those who already have a trekking pole and are looking to save weight in their rucksack.

Full specifications:

  • Berth: 1
  • Style: Teepee

Forclaz Trek 900 1 Person Tent

The Forclaz Trek 900 is a low cost, Y-Framed self standing tent designed for the solo camper.

For your £110, you get a tent with a hydrostatic head of 2,000mm for the rain fly, which is a good amount for most weather in the UK.

Weighing 1,300 grams, this tent weighs just above average for a 1 man tent but should be fine for you to stick in your rucksack.

The sleeping area on this tent is fairly narrow, at just 60cm wide. This will fit most sleeping mats inside, but not much else.

If you want a roomy tent for wild camping, this probably won’t be for you.

Full specifications:

  • Berth: 1
  • Style: Y-Frame
  • Weight: 1,300g
  • Price: £110

DD Superlight 1 Person Tarp Tent

The DD Superlight Tarp Tent is a very light 1 man tent, weighing in at just 710 grams.

For the relatively low price of £135, you get a rain fly with a hydrostatic head of 3,000mm, which is perfectly adequate for most months of the year in the UK.

You get a decent amount of bedroom space with this tent, with a floorspace of around 250cm x 110cm. This is plenty of space for you, your sleeping mat and some of your cleaner items to join you inside your tent. There is also a small area for your muddy boots as well in the porch.

The downside with this tent is that it is designed to be used with some walking poles, which are not included with the tent. This is one of the main reasons that this tent is so light compared to other tents with poles included.

A great choice for those who already have walking poles and are just looking at a good 1 man tent to go with them.

Full specifications:

  • Berth: 1
  • Style: Tunnel
  • Weight: 710g
  • Price: £135

Weighing just 732 grams, this tent is very light and packs down to just 28cm x 12cm in your rucksack. Perfect for those wanting to save space and weight. The downside is that you need to use trekking poles for the supports, which you would need to take with you on your trip.

The tent also comes with a hydrostatic head of 3,000mm for both the fly and groundsheet, which is suitable for most conditions in the UK.

The sleeping space on this tent is quite generous also, with a floor space of 229cm x 122cm. This should be more than enough for 1 wild camper and their gear.

Big Agnes Scout 1 Platinum Tent

The Big Agnes Scout 1 Platinum Tent is an ultralight tent for those looking to pack the lightest gear possible.

Weighing just 366 grams, this tent is ridiculously light. However, there are some significant compromises you make for this mega light tent.

Narrowing down to 56cm at the “pointy” end of the tent, you don’t get a lot of room inside the tent. At 213cm long, it’s also not the longest tent, but should be enough for your average wild camper.

The hydrostatic head of 1,200mm is quite low compared to other tents as well, but should be enough withstand most weather in the UK warmer months.

The bedroom space of this tent is 222cm x 79cm is quite long, but fairly narrow. This should still be fine for your gear, but isn’t palatial compared to other tents. You do get a decent porch space for your wet gear though.

Hopefully from the above, you have been able to find a tent that takes your fancy. I believe the best 1 man tent for wild camping is the Terra Nova Competition 1 as it is a premium quality tent with premiums standard features. You’re unlikely to get caught out by the weather in this tent.

If you are still not sure if wild camping is for you and don’t want to splash out too much on your first tent, the Vango Nevis 100 will offer you great protection from the elements at a fraction of the price.

Is there anything that I have missed that you need to know about? Let me know and I will try and add it to this guide.
